How can you tell if your heart is healthy? Are there certain signs or symptoms that will alert you? Truth be told, oftentimes you can’t tell if you have a problem with your heart until it becomes an emergency. And then, it may be too late. 

I can remember it like yesterday – I was in my first year of medical school when I received a call from my mom that changed my course forever. She called to let me know she “wasn’t feeling right” and after telling me a few more of her symptoms, I suggested that she go to the ER. There she learned that she had significant coronary artery disease (the arteries that supply blood to the heart) and went on to have a 4-vessel bypass to clear the blockage in her heart followed by therapy and recuperation.

As I watched my mom go through this process, I realized just how important the role of disease prevention is. I decided to make sure I did everything I could to help decrease the likelihood and risk of having heart disease.  I have devoted my career to helping others prevent chronic medical conditions as well.

So, how can you keep your heart healthy? Here are 5 tips to get you started!

  1. Maintain regular yearly checkups – It is so important to have a yearly physical exam from your physician. Your vital signs may reflect weight abnormalities as well as elevated blood pressure or an abnormal heart rate. During the exam, your doctor may detect clues that something may be wrong like abnormal swelling or heart rhythms. In addition, lab work can help detect abnormalities in cholesterol. Do not assume that you are healthy. Maintain regular follow-ups for a healthy heart.

  2. Consume a healthy diet – We’ve all heard this before but it is crucial that we minimize processed and other unhealthy foods. We should eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables which are packed with vitamins and nutrients, as well as omega 3 fatty acids.

  3. Exercise – Your heart is a muscle and cardiovascular exercise helps to keep your heart pumping well.

  4. Know your family history – It is important to know your risks and take the necessary precautions to avoid the same fate.

  5. Take your symptoms seriously– If you do experience chest pain or any other concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to see your doctor or go to the ER if it is an emergency.
